Epic Fail Stocking Cake

For my daughters 12 birthday I was sick. Rude. I know. Seriously, though. She didn't really know what she wanted so we decided on a Stocking Cake. I had this amazing, fondant covered cake in mind. It was going to be Epic.

Wrong.

It looks like I let my 4 year old loose with the frosting. You know it's bad when she keeps saying... it's fine mom. I love it. Really, mom. I love it. Stop trying to convince me. I failed you on your 12th birthday. I suck.

It's a good thing she's cute, otherwise I wouldn't have posted this at all...... Have you ever had an epic fail cake???

Owl Cake

For my sons fourth birthday we made an owl cake. I probably should have done something a little more...manly. Like a truck or a racetrack or something awesome like that. But...we did an owl. Deal.

This was my version . It is just lines of cupcakes, coconut, mini choc chips, thin chocolate cookies and a few extras. I actually love the way it turned out. He looks pretty happy, eh?

For this cake I used a large round pan. Probably like a 15 inch circle. I watched a few YouTube videos on making tie dye cakes and went to town. It was really very easy. Just make your cake batter, divide it into however many different colors you'd like and die each batch their own color. Next, just glob different colors all over the pan with random placement. Do not drag anything through to "swirl" the colors. You get a muddy, brownish type cake. Trust me, I learned the hard way! Just leave it be and cook. It turned out really fun!!

I just free hand cut out the insides to make the peace sign. I was going to frost the while thing and have it be a surprise when it was cut into, but my husband suggested just frosting the top and leaving the color exposed. I actually like the way it turned out. Not really fancy or difficult to do, just kind of fun!

This is the cake that I made for my daughters 11th birthday. She is a hippie at heart. It turned out really cute!! She loved the tie-dye birthday cake, I loved the peace sign birthday cake idea. I made them both work, kind of!

ONE OF A KIND

So...this is the one and only cake I will ever make for someone outside of my family. Just FYI. I have always, in the back of my mind, thought I might LOVE to open a little cake shop. Make cakes for other people. I love making cakes and seeing what I can do. Love it. Not so much for other people. All of the sudden I feel so self-conscious and very un-talented. I don't have any sort of technique. I always kind of... wing it. I call it "ghetto" style. Usually I just kind of start out with a blob of cake and make it what I want.

So...here goes.

Yep. I told you. Don't look too close. This was for my sweet cute neighbor friend who just graduated from high school. Her mom asked me to make her graduation cake. Sure...no problem . I was so excited. After a fitful night of "non sleep" and making myself sick....let's just say....fondant and I aren't friends. Nothing a little 2 inch black ribbon won't fix, right? Sorry Codi. I love you anyway!!!

So....that's all she wrote. My professional cake making career began and ended with this!!

Big Bird Cake

It's been a while eh? So sorry! Life is crazy. Here is the latest and maybe not the greatest!!

I made this for my son's 3rd birthday. I had wonderful visions in my head, it didn't quite translate but...I guess you can tell what it is, right??

I just baked the cake in a glass bowl. Covered it in frosting and then in dyed coconut. I found huge jawbreakers at Macey's in the bulk food section and covered the top half with pink fondant. Used blue piping gel for the line and black gel for the pupils. I used 2 sugar cones and kind of "sculpted" them with a really sharp serrated knife (kind of tricky...they break easily!!) so that they fit together to kind of form a beak. Covered it in fondant and then used small triangles of fondant for the inside of the beak and the tongue. There you go.....

I kind of thought this picture was funny. Huge eyeballs and crumbs... hehe!

Groundhog Day Cupcakes

Here are some cute groundhog cupcakes that my cousin, Melinda made. How come I am not this creative???

She just made chocolate cupcakes and used chocolate marshmallow fondant and just plain white fondant for the teeth. Mini chocolate chips for the eyes and a regular chocolate chip for the nose. White frosting is the snow and chocolate crumbs for the dirt peeking through the snow!! Thanks for the fun idea. I also thought chocolate dipped marshmallows would make great "groundhogs". Maybe not, I'm just not crafty enough to make my own fondant....:)

Campfire Cake Reveal!!

Looks like a pretty happy kid, eh?

Well, the cake turned out okay. I should have stuck with the "original" and just done the campfire. I had this whole "camp area" in my mind. Sleeping bag, fire, roasting shmellows. The whole bit. The shmellows and the fire turned out great but the sleeping bag ended up looking like a green lump. Oh well. It's the thought that counts, right? In case you were wondering, here's the play by play....

9x13 cake carved out to resemble a green lump and covered in fondant. Frosting smeared on the left to hold down the "ashes". (Note: First successful coloring of fondant and fondant not making me swear!! Yay me!!!)

Crumbled donut holes. The recipe called for chocolate donut holes. Do those even exist? I looked EVERYWHERE!!!! So, we went with powdered donuts for "white hot ashes".

Two loaf pans with edges and ends carved to resemble logs.....one small cupcake top frosted and added to top log to resemble a knot in the tree....

White frosting added to chocolate frosting to make a contrasting color. Piped in a circular pattern on ends of logs.

Fruit roll ups cut to resemble logs. Red and yellow gel to help with fiery glow. Turned out more like ketchup and mustard. OH well.... There's got to be a better way to do flames. They kept falling over. Ideas?

The end result. Okay, I guess. I'm learning from my mistakes. Simplify. Note: I intended to use mini-marshmallows for the roasters. They were too sticky and looked weird when smashed onto the bamboo skewer. So I improvised and made them out of fondant.

All in all, not a bad cake. The boy loved it. That's all that matters!!!!

Red Velvet "Man" Cake

My friend Andy sent me these pictures to document her husband's first cake. It's officially called the "Man Cake". Apparently this is what happens when you watch too much "Cake Boss"!!!

I have never partaken of said "Red Velvet" cake. Have you? Is it a Southern thing? I thought it was something they made up for the movie "Steel Magnolias". That said. Apparently it is a real thing and after these pictures, I really REALLY want to try some!!!!

Here's the cakes all stacked and ready to frost!! Can you say YUM!!! I hear it was supposed to be four layers but it would have toppled!!!

She never told me what kind of frosting, but by the color I'm guessing cream cheese?

Candyland Cake

I have quite a few cakes in the wings....ready to post. But I just couldn't hold this one off any longer!!!! It really is creative, different and so awesome!!!

My cousin Melinda made this for her son Aaron's first birthday. It's a Candy land themed cake. She covered her cake in fondant and all of the decorations were made from gum paste. Such a great cake. Thanks Melinda.

She also made a "smash" cake for him to eat!! So fun!

Holy Cutest Mickey Mouse Cake

Wow. That is all I can say...what an imagination!!!

This cake makes my brain hurt even imagining how to make this whole thing work. What an incredibly cute and amazing cake!!!

Thanks Jimi for sending me this one. Her friend made it for her son's birthday. What a fun cake!! Here's how she did it....

For the house portion, she baked a cake in her small pampered chef glass measuring bowl.

She used styrofoam balls spray painted black for the head and ears...smart!!

She cut 2 hands out of cardboard and glued them together and then covered them in fondant for the glove.

A cupcake covered in fondant made the foot and she cut a cupcake and made the leg out of it and covered that in fondant as well.

Wow, that's an ambitious cake but it was worth all of the work!! It turned out so cute!!!!!!

Spider Web Cupcakes

I know I'm a little late. But, better late than never!!!

My sister made these cute cupcakes for our family Halloween Party.

I'm quite certain that she found them on a very cute and creative website. I just can't remember which one that might be. :)

She found, on that cute website, a template to use to make the webs. She put the template under wax paper and piped white chocolate onto the template. Waited for it to harden and voila!!

She did the same with the pumpkins. Chocolate, harden, voila!!

She made some amazing chocolate cupcakes and frosted them with cream cheese frosting and put the webs and pumpkins on top.

They turned out so cute.

You could also do.....spiders, chocolate frosting, candy corn....etc. They turned out darling!! Thanks for the cute idea, Mer.

Let me start off by saying this. I <3 peanut butter and chocolate. It's not something that I can control. It's something that has plagued me since childhood. I can't really explain it, it just is. It makes me weak in the knees, it makes me cry a little bit and I have zero self control.

My sister found this cake over on Picky Palate. So, what else could I do? I HAD to try it. I mean, come on. I had to.

How delish does that look? Not only did it look good, it tasted even better. How often does that happen??? It was actually BETTER than I had hoped.

Cream cheese, chocolate cake, peanut butter and chocolate. Does it get any better?

I ate myself into a peanut butter and chocolate induced coma.

It was swell.

Don't look too close, because it isn't great!!! But, this is the only Halloween cake I've ever made!!!

I made it for a mother/daughter activity last year and they had a cake walk...

I just baked two bundt cakes (so you get the ridges on the sides) and turned one upside down and frosted. Used a cupcake turned upside down for the stem. I would definitely do some things different next time....but, hey!!!! It's the thought that counts, right??

....this one's for you!!!

I made this one for my son's 2nd birthday! He had this cute little Gap baseball cap that he wore EVERYWHERE!!! So, I decided to make it into a cake. Not until I finished the hat portion did I realize I had about enough cake to feel him, alone. So. Quickly I made up some cupcakes and decided to use them in the cake theme. I just frosted them white and used red gel frosting and made "baseball stitching". I wasn't sure at first how it would turn out, but I was glad I did. It made the cake perfect! I really love the way this one turned out.

side note. To get that rich blue color I used about 14 cups of blue dye. Every one's mouths turned blue. It was quite amusing to watch. hehe

My sister made this cake for her daughters 1st birthday! Yay Zoe!!

This is the perfect summer birthday cake! You could do tons of different stuff with this to make it for a girl or a boy!

She made 2 9x13 cakes and made a pattern to cut the cakes out. Just frost in cute bright colors and she used twizzlers for the straps. I have also seen it done with fondant and it doesn't stay upright as well! I definitely like the twizzler idea! So....

Cute, right!?! Graham cracker crumbs for the sand (much better than my Golden Oreo's attempt at sand :) )

I made this cake for our friend Julie's birthday!! We were invited to a luau surprise birthday party for her. Of course I had to bring the cake....It took me about 25 seconds to put this together (that's all the time I had!! :) ) So, don't judge. You get the idea.

So, here is my sorry attempt at a lady bug. It actually looks a little bit creepy. The smile reminds me of the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland. Poor little girl..... Oh well. It would have been cute without that. I just made 2 round cakes in a Pyrex bowl. Cut a crescent shape out of one and fit them together and frosted in red. Junior Mints made the dots and black toothpicks (colored with a sharpie!!) with gumdrops on top for the antennae and the creepy smile is done the same way, just pushed the toothpicks in all the way!! Enjoy.

Caterpiller Birthday Cake

So, here is my ONE slimy. slithery. creature cake!! I usually try to talk them into something that I "know how to make" or can figure out! This one took a little research and development, if you will. I ended up using two bundt cakes that I made. Cut them in half from side to side not top to bottom. Connecting them flat surface to flat surface and it made a curvy caterpillar! Frosting was a bit more tricky than I had bargained for, but it worked and it was a big hit!! I just used gum drops and tooth picks to make antenna. I don't actually know if caterpillars have antennae, but mine did!!!! So, sue me.

Turned out pretty cute, right?

Are you singing the theme song to the "mickey mouse club"? I am!! This cake (cookie) is so dang cute!! Melinda made this for a birthday. It's actually a big chocolate chip cookie (I think, right?) Cut to the shape of Mickey, which is a pretty basic shape. Decorated with frosting, star tip with black frosting and then outlined in black frosting.

Can you say YUMMY!!!

I believe these were made from a cupcake mold, right? Then decorated in true Mickey fashion! What a cute birthday party, I'm sure!

Underwater Topsy Turvy Cake

This cute "Under the Sea" topsy turvy cake is from Melinda. Wow! This is way beyond my level of expertise! She totally rocked this cake. If I remember correctly she covered it in blue fondant and used colored gum paste to make the starfish and turtles and other sea creatures. What an adorable first birthday cake. Even a "mini" version for the birthday boy! Thanks Melinda!! This one is a keeper!

Taco Birthday Cake

This is what happens when a nine year old girl can't decide what kind of birthday cake she wants! I get creative and fall back on the old "scout cake auction" kind of cakes my dad used to make! I think this one turned out pretty cute! Original and quirky. Just like my nine year old!

Just when you thought you'd seen it all....You can pretty much make a cake into anything you'd like! Fun. What fun cakes have you made??

Cute Train Birthday Cake

So, here it is. The much anticipated (ha!) train birthday cake! I think it turned out pretty cute. There are definitley some things I would do differently, but all in all, it's a train, what else can you ask for?

I think I put too many train cars on there. I should have left one off, so you could see more of the track. It turned out really cute and you can't see it at all. Oh well. Live and Learn.

I just made 7 small loaf pans of cake. I froze them and once I was ready to use them I started hacking away. I cut kind of a well, or a hole in the top of 3 of the cakes, to use as cargo cars. Basically just so I could load them with candy and it wouldn't spill over the edges, to kind of contain it! I left the other one just regular and frosted it, for the animal cage. For the engine, I cut the front of it into a V for the cattle guard and stacked another cake on top and then just another little piece, just to give it some dimension. I don't know that it necessarily looks like an engine, but you get the idea. I gave them all a "crumb coat" of frosting and refrigerated them to stiffen up the frosting a bit. Right before I was ready to assemble the cake, I gave them a final frost and placed them on the tracks.

For the tracks, I used those peppermint sticks. I think they were on clearance from Christmas. They were the perfect width. Then I cut chocolate twizzlers in half lengthwise, and placed them across the sticks. See why I wanted to be able to see it. Pretty cute. I just made mini cupcakes, frosted the tops and wrote on them "choo choo Cole's 2" not very creative, but it gets the point across.

The final product. I just took some white frosting and added some details to the cars. For the animal car, I used toothpicks with dots on top. I couldn't really think of a way to make a "circus car" so, I guess that works :)!! I used a little bit of polyfil (batting) for the smoke. I just kind of pulled it apart so it looked like smoke and stuck a toothpick through it to hold it on. For the headlight, a Dot with a toothpick through it! Tootsie rolls for logs, whoppers for coal (whatever!), m & m's for well, m & m's I suppose. It just looked cute!

Cake Pops!

Okay, this is definitely NOT an original Emily idea. I totally stole these from Bakerella, but they are divine! My sisters and I made them for my cute sister-in-laws baby shower on Saturday. They were cinchy to make and impressive to look at (not so much mine!) and yummy as all get out! And I figured hey, they're made out of cake. They're totally going on my blog. So, here we go....

You start out by making a cake. Just a plain old cake. I made carrot. Then, once it's completely cooled you break it apart and shred it into fine crumbs. You can even put it in the food processor or blender. The finer the crumbs the better it blends. Next comes frosting(I used cream cheese). You can use any flavor. It's best to use the store bought kind in the round containers. The consistency works the best and then you can measure how much you're using!! Start off with about 2/3 of the container. Scoop it into the bowl with the cake crumbs and using the back of a spoon, smash and mix it all together until it is about the consistency of wet sand. Use a bit more if you need it. You don't want it too wet, but if it's too crumbly, it won't stick together to make the ball shape. Next, shape into balls with your hands and place on a wax covered sheet until it's all used up!! The next part is easy. You get sucker sticks ( Roberts, Funfinity, any cooking store) and you dip the tip of it into a bit of melted dipping chocolate. Once you have dipped just the tip in the chocolate, stick it into the balls. Like so...

Up close shot. Once you're finished put them in the freezer immediately. The melted chocolate will hold the cake and the pop together, so that when you dip them they stay on the stick. Leave them in the freezer for at least an hour. Longer if you need more time!!

And then melt your dipping chocolate (I used white chocolate) over a double broiler. Remember, DO NOT LET THE WATER BOIL UNDERNEATH. It will ruin the chocolate. Then just dip the pops in the chocolate and cover completely.

After I covered them I would lift them out and gently spin them to get the excess chocolate off. Then stand them upright in a styrofoam block and decorate as you wish. I used pink sprinkles (girl baby :))

Okay, so they're not beautiful or perfect, but they're yummy and I love them.

I served them like this. Not great, but hey, it worked! Notice the little cracks in the chocolate. I don't know how to avoid that. It just happens when you dip frozen cake in hot chocolate and it hardens too quickly. Sorry, but they still taste so good! Try it. The possibilities are endless. Chocolate cake, coconut pecan icing, chocolate and nuts on top. Strawberry cake, vanilla frosting, chocolate. You could do a million things. Try it and let me know what you think.

Okay, here's the plan. My son turns 2 next Sunday. I have been planning to make him a "train" cake. I've been having ideas swirl around in my head for about a month. I've watched you tube video and looked at pictures. Still not certain of my exact approach. Have any of you ever made a train cake or seen one made? She made this cute Butterfly cake for her twin daughter's birthday cake. This is her description of how she did it:

I used a small heart cake pan, which I baked a cake in 4 times, so it took a little longer than if maybe you had two, but I am too cheap, and then I used plastic easter eggs layed open for the middle.

Turned out way cute. I never thought of using heart shapes for the wings. Thanks a ton Brianne for the picture!

This cake I made for my daughter's first birthday! My first big cake. How exciting. That was 8 years ago. Yikes!

I made 2 9 by 13 cakes and made a template of the wings on a piece of paper. Then I cut them out and used 2 twinkies for the body/head. I just laid it all out on the tray and then frosted it with white frosting (obviously) and used sprinkles and tube gel frosting to decorate and I think I used black shoestring licorice for antennae, but I don't remember! Hope this brings loads of spring time inspiration!!

This is a cute cake and baby!! This one was sent in by Shauntel. She got the idea from Martha Stewart. The cake was cooked in a bowl and turned upside down. She then cut out little chunks on the side for the ears and used ding dongs for the ears. Frosted it all and then used white frosting for the details with brown m&m's for the eyes!! So cute!! My cake savvy cousin, Melinda, sent me this cute monkey cake! Isn't this darling. I just love it!! She made it for a "groom's cake". So clever!! I love monkeys and this one is awesome. I am entirely untalented, now I see that...

Here's what she did:

I used a winnie the pooh 3-D cake mold. After baking the cake I cut down the nose, cut off the ears and didn’t follow the markings when frosting. I added ½ of a nilla wafer for each ear and some extra cake cut into the shape of a tail. I decorated all over (except hands/feet and face) with stars. I got the bananas from runts candy.

This is one of my favorite cakes that I have made! I made this cake for my first son's first birthday! I think the reason I like this one so much is that it's really original and I completley came up with it on my own. No help. Just an idea and lots of crap from the craft store!! I just want to throw this out there. This is the best thing EVER for cakes!! I spent too many years with a greasy napkin digging into corners and crevices of pans only to toss it with flour and see all of the spots I had missed!! Not any more! This puppy covers it all! I can't even express my love for this product. If you haven't tried it, you must!

You just spray it on like Pam or whatever you usually use. It is the best. No sticking! EVER!! Especially for those pesky bundt pans. This sucker rocks it! So, give it a shot.

Just cooked a regular cake and either cut it into squares or just crumble it up, mix it with chocolate pudding and it would be really cute with gummy worms mixed in there!!! Throw it all in the back of a clean and new dump truck and you're good to go. To top it all off, serve it with a shovel! Does it get any better than that???

So, my talented cousin, Melinda, sent me this cake picture as well. I have a feeling she is going to be a frequent contributor!!!!

She made this cake for her son's birthday! She used 2 9" round cakes and cut a chunk out of the side of one, so they fit together. Then frosted them and used the white candies from "Good 'n' Plenty" for the road and lines. She used her sons "Cars" cars for decoration! I think it turned out really cute and any little boy would love this cake!! Thanks, Melinda!

My ACTUAL Cake in Motion

Geez. It has taken me forever to sort through pictures. I hate the combination of boxes of old pictures and discs to go through and files on the computer. Needless to say, this has taken me a while. I know you have just been waiting with baited breath for this, so here you go!

It's a scanned picture, so you don't really get the full effect, but... I think it turned out really cute! My son loved it and my favorite part is the monster truck running over the car!! He he. I just made a 9 by 13 cake and frosted it with white frosting. I dyed the coconut green and pressed it into the frosting before it dried. Crushed up oreos made up the track and just pressed them in the shape of the track. I couldn't decide how to make the finish line, so I just got two toothpicks and taped paper around them that I had already designed. Not too shabby.

I have a few "cakes in motion" waiting in the wings. I need more!!!! Send me your cute pics!!!

I came across this ancient picture while sorting through my old pictures (I love digital cameras, fyi!!), I am looking for a racetrack cake picture that I made for my son a few years back! I hope I can find it, it was really cute. So, this will have to do for now.

This is a cake I made for my husband's birthday about 5 or 6 years ago. It isn't that cute, or great but I thought it might be funny to post. (This is his "acting like I love this cake and getting my picture taken" look). This was at the beginning of my "cute cake" mission, so bear with me. There is a long story behind this truck. It is the truck that his dad bought the year he was born, and his dad gave it to him when he turned 18. He then completely redid it and turned it into a 4-wheeling truck, much to his fathers chagrin!! Oh well, that's what teenagers do, right?? Anywho, the truck is like part of the family and am quite certain it outranks most of us on things he would never get rid of :)!! Enjoy my silliness!! The Walk of Shame...

So, apparently, this is what a Pirate Ship cake is supposed to look like. Holy Cow! I feel like a schmuck. I should delete the picture of mine. Yuck.

This one was sent to me by my cousin Melinda. Apparently we both have the "fun kids cake" gene! Fun to see how much you can have in common with some one you don't know as well as you'd like. This is how I had pictured mind turning out. And, sometimes when I close my eyes, it's what mine looked like! he he.

Here are the instructions that she sent with the cake: Made two cakes and cut out the shape of a ship. I used homemade marshmallow fondant (cut into planks) for the outside of the ship. The deck I frosted with butter cream frosting. I made the masts out of royal icing (piped onto wax paper and let it dry), the treasure box, plank and anchor were made out of marshmallow fondant. This is one of my favorite cakes ever!!

Thanks, Melinda, for sending in all of the cute cake pics. There will definitely be more to come from her!!! Keep 'em coming people. I love it. I need all the inspiration I can get. #3's birthday is just around the corner!!!

Okay, so admittedly, this is not my best cake. But I don't want to give it all up on the first date....you know what I mean?? This one I got the idea from Family Fun and kind of tweeked it a little bit. After I finished it, I looked at it and realized that it didn't look like a pirate ship at all, but it sort of resembled, well...a floating hunk of chocolate. I think I could have figured something else out on my own, that would have more closely resembled a ship. Oh well. Live and learn, it made a 6 year old boy happy. Mission accomplished. Quite proud of the face that the root beer barrels actually resemble kegs, or something piratey (?)! Have you ever done a pirate cake? I bet it kicked my pirate cake's trash. Send 'em in...

I have been thinking about starting one of these for a while, so here we go! I love making fun cakes. It started way back when my dad made a taco cake for a scout auction. It was the hit of the night. Ever since then, I can't get enough. For each child's birthday, I have to come up with something fun, that represents them and is unique!! I am kind of known for having the "cool cakes". It's kind of fun for me. I am not super creative, but I think I can make a mean cake. Hey, you have to be good at something, right???

Well, I am going to start us off by posting a few of the fun cakes I have made, but I need help!! I want your cakes, too.
